Top places to see in Europe? When Dutch artist Ary Scheffer built this small villa in 1830, the area teemed with composers, writers and artists. Novelist George Sand was a guest at Scheffer’s soirees, along with Chopin and Liszt. The museum is mainly dedicated to Sand, but also displays Scheffer’s paintings and other mementoes from the Romantic era. Renovated in 2013, the museum’s tree-lined courtyard cafe and greenhouse make for a perfect summertime retreat.

Near the lovely old city of Utrecht, the fourth largest in the Netherlands, De Haar Castle (Kasteel De Haar) is the largest fortification in the country. This spectacular castle, built by the famous Dutch architect PJH Cuypers, required so much land (it sits on a spectacular 250-acre park) that the entire village of Haarzuilens had to be relocated to accommodate it. While the original castle site was established in the 14th century, this newer structure dates from 1892 and is well worth taking the time to explore. Inside, you’ll be rewarded with impressive collections of antiques, furniture, paintings, and tapestries, but it’s the gardens that really draw the crowds – along with the castle’s fairy-tale looks.
Gozo Island is the most idyllic destination of the Maltese Islands. With its quiet towns and pristine beaches, this little island is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing vacation for several days or even a weeklong stay. Although Gozo is less developed than Malta, the island has plenty of cultural attractions: a fortified medieval city, Victoria; a bustling seaside resort, Marsalforn; and the most important archaeological site of the Maltese Islands, Ggantija Temples, dating back to around 3500 BC. Being an island, it is no wonder that Kalymnos too is a hotbed for everything watersport. In particular, these activities take place within the sea channel that separate Kalymnos from Telendos. A number of sporting activities do take place here. These are sailing, windsurfing, sea kayaking, competitive swimming, scuba diving, and canoes. You may choose to go solo or participate in the various events which are hosted by the local municipalities. Also complementing your enjoyment of these issues are the numerous rental facilities. You need not necessarily carry your own sporting equipment. Instead, you have the privilege of renting your own from the various companies that deal with them. Be ready though to part with some money to access the venues and take part in sporting activities.
